Short Stories in French for intermediate learners is one of the books from a large collection for language learners developed by the one and only Olly Richards, a polyglot and experienced language teacher, creator of the story learning method and popular learning blog "storylearning.com"
Besides that, not only does he speak 8 different languages, but he is also a CELTA and DELTA holder and an experienced language learner, and a professor.
Now, what about the book itself?
The book is compounded of 8 stories, each of which contains 3 chapters. This might not sound important, but it actually is when it comes to the efficiency, enjoyment, and comprehension of the stories, among other important things.
Along the stories, you will find some words or phrases in bold which you will find their meaning at the end of each chapter as well as a few comprehension questions.
Now let's break this down and get into more details.
The chapter's length is from my point of view right on the spot, neither too short nor too long, which makes you feel comfortable and excited throughout the whole reading. Regarding the bolded words, I would say they are pretty well chosen, not to mention that are properly repeated throughout the whole book... Perfectly repeated, I would say. However, even though there are enough words in bold per chapter, I would have included a bit more as they are "sort of addictive", yet this is just a personal taste rather than a downside.
On the other hand, what I do think is a negative point is the comprehension questions section at the end of each chapter. They are, in my opinion, way too easy for an intermediate learner. In my case, I basically didn't even read them as I found them almost useless.
In addition, we have bad news and good news. Once you purchase the book, you will find a code inside the book to download a bonus story as a gift for having purchased the book, yet bad news is right around the corner. The audiobook is not included, although there is a 50% discount code inside the book, so you can get it.
When I first get my book, I was honestly a bit disappointed to find out that after having bought the book, I still had to spend some extra money for the audio. It is not a big matter, but I would take it into account as audio tends to be a paramount resource for language learning in combination with transcriptions, in this case, the book.
Last but not least, at the very beginning of the book you will find the following pages:
Contents
About the author
Introduction
How to read effectively
The six-step reading process
If you are a beginner language learner you will find super useful the last 2 sections as you are going to find some interesting advice, tips, and recommendations in order for you to get the most out of the book.
Well, this is easy...
Had I known before the story learning collection, I would have definitely bought the entire series since the very beginning, especially taking into account that finding such useful resources in other languages tends to be tricky.
Is it worth buying after considering the pros and cons?
Definitely yes, just take into consideration this last thing. The entire series are written in English which might be a huge problem for you if you don't speak it as you won't probably understand the translation of the words in bold nor the first pages of the book such as the author's information, the author's recommendations, etc.
You can always use a translator, but that will end up in a less fluent reading flow and might be a bit frustrating for some of you, apart from that you will love it.
