The reason for which most people do not thrive when learning a new language.
Honestly, it is not complicated to understand, yet, people still do not reflect on what I like to call "The language learning phenomenon".
But let's analyze the background. A language classroom is just like a gym. Tell me how many people sign up for a gym at the very beginning of the year?
Go see a gym in January-February and you will see it is to be fully packed, you will not find room for another person. Then try visiting the same gym by midyear, and finally try visiting it around November-December at the very end of the year.
Draw your own conclusions and tell me, how many people were left, unlike January?
I assure you that at least 30% to 50% of the initial people you saw, by December, had already quit.
And why is that? Because motivation is the only thing they had when they first started and unfortunately, motivation is the thing we need the less.
It is discipline that we need. Discipline, grit, commitment, a change of mindset. These are paramount features we need if we really want to succeed in the language learning journey.
Therefore, if you want to achieve your goal and not be part of the unfortunate majority of people who do not reach the goal, you must be willing to resist, persist, and more important overcome the black side of the process.
It might sound easy, but it is actually not, if learning a language was simple everyone would speak at least two languages at a decent level.
Having said that, you may want to ask yourself before starting:
"Am I really willing to dedicate quality time and endure the tough process that learning a language implies?"
"Am I really willing to keep going forward, even when you already know it implies a good amount of effort in the long term?"
You must understand that learning a language is not as easy as school advertising would have us believe. It is not a sprint, but a long run.
Learning a language requires quality time, and repeated extensive study over time.
Motivation may be useful, but it is not going to be there for you forever. Thus, you must be disciplined and prioritize the will to do things even when you don't feel like doing them.
Studying for hours and hours per day is not actually necessary, in fact, overstudying may eventually lead you to a burnout. Dose your study by aiming for frequency over intensity.
And finally, embrace your mistakes, learn from them, and enjoy the process as much as you can, celebrate your little victories, understand that feelings such as frustration, occasional sadness, the feeling of wanting to give up are completely normal and part of the journey, you just have to learn to get along with them.
Success on your journey, Teacher Leo
